Dolly Parton has said she “would never say no to a sweet potato pie.” Well, she would say yes to this recipe for sure. It’s topped with marshmallows to add a delightful twist to the traditional recipe, and blends the sweetness of the potatoes with the gooey, toasted marshmallow topping.
The marshmallows caramelize under the broiler, creating a beautiful, golden crust that’s visually appealing and deliciously satisfying. Here’s a recipe inspired by Dolly’s style for making an upgraded sweet potato pie with a marshmallow topping:
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 60 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Servings: 8 servings
Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes: 2 cups, cooked and mashed
Unsalted Butter: 1/2 cup, melted
Sugar: 1 cup
Brown Sugar: 1/2 cup, packed
Evaporated Milk: 1 cup
Eggs: 2, large
Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon
Ground Cinnamon: 1/2 teaspoon
Ground Nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon
Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
Unbaked Pie Crust: 1 (9-inch)
Marshmallows: 1 cup, mini or regular size (if regular, halved)
Directions
STEP 1
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place your pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish.
STEP 2
Mix Filling: In a large bowl, blend the mashed sweet potatoes with melted butter until smooth. Incorporate sugar, brown sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the filling is smooth and evenly combined.
STEP 3
Fill Pie Crust: Transfer the sweet potato mixture into the unbaked pie crust, smoothing out the top with a spatula.
STEP 4
Bake: Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until the pie filling is set and the crust appears golden brown.
STEP 5
Add Marshmallows: Remove the pie from the oven and evenly distribute the marshmallows over the top of the pie. Ensure even coverage to allow for uniform caramelization.
STEP 6
Broil: Switch your oven setting to broil, and place the pie back in the oven. Broil for 2-3 minutes or until the marshmallows are golden brown and puffed up. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
STEP 7
Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving. This step is crucial as it helps the filling and marshmallow topping set properly.
This sweet potato pie with marshmallows offers a beautiful combination of flavors and textures, perfect for a special occasion or holiday treat.
